I am so touched by a letter we just received to our program and I just had to share it on Facebook. I am struggling to find funding to continue and expand Empact Long Beach, and was feeling like maybe it's time to move on and do something else on my journey. Then we get an email with the below letter regarding a bike EmpactLB donated to a teenager living with his family in transition housing after his bike was stolen. I am reminded of why I am bike advocate in the first place. I needed the encouragement and I am thankful to have the opportunity to serve my community. What a way to start off the new year. The names have been excluded and replaced with generic terms in caps for confidentially. COORDINATOR, I wanted to share with you how touched my young client, TEENAGER, along with his mother, MOMMIE, appeared to be when they received the bike. It was so tender experience, let me explain. When TEENAGER first walked in to the Center to retrieve the bike, he appeared quiet and pensive. However, as soon as we made eye contact, he began ardently stating how sorry he was about the damage to our property and for the fact that our security camera was stolen. He actually stated “It’s my fault, if I didn’t leave my bike here, it would not have happened.” I assured him that the only people who should be feeling bad right now are the people who stole his bike, but the guilt on his face remained. Imagine, with all the other problems in this teen’s life, he is actually feeling bad for THE ORGANIZATION after his bike is stolen. I shared all the encouraging words that I could and apologized to him for what happened to his bike, and then gave him the most heartening smile that I could, and effortlessly, that smile was reciprocated. TEENAGER’s mood seemed to lighten significantly! He then asked who donated the bike, and after I replied, he looked at me thoughtfully and asked if I wouldn’t mind telling this organization just how thankful he was for their generosity. His mom held my hand while sharing her son’s sentiments. They walked out so happy, it was a very lovely moment. 1000 digital thank you’s to everybody who made this happen! Warmly, YOUTH COUNSELOR

This exclusion based on race and income is a national issue and I'm curious what cities in California plan to do about this, especially Long Beach. Any updates @Nate Baird? http://chi.streetsblog.org/2014/12/19/advocates-request-a-fair-share-of-bike-resources-for-black-communities/

We need to hear from you about biking, especially from people of color. Our communities are the ones that receive the least amount of local and federal resources and now is the time to change that. Please complete this short survey by midnight tomorrow (Friday) to help us make our streets safer for everyone. Please share with your network. Thank you!

Troubling to see where most of the hit-and-runs have happened. Long Beach has way too many. We really need to start paying more attention to this issue and finding ways to get it to 0.
