Healthy Active Streets (HAS) was founded in 2014 as Empact Communities. We use the bicycle as a tool to empower youth, women, communities of color, and other underserved groups — and to build a movement for safer, more equitable streets.

We're based in Long Beach, where people of color are disproportionately injured or killed while walking and biking, and where they bear an outsized share of pollution-related health harms — outcomes too often determined by zip code, not chance.

Our mission is to educate, organize, and provide resources to underserved communities. Our vision is a region built on mobility, equity, and environmental justice.

Healthy Active Streets is an anti-racist, community-based organization. To us, that means fostering an environment where everyone—regardless of race or skin color—knows they are valued and feels free to express themselves. We recognize that systemic and interpersonal racism harm the health of people of color. So we work to identify, discuss, challenge, and dismantle racism in everything we do, while creating safe spaces for people to learn and grow.

HAS Mobility Hub

At the corner of Long Beach Blvd and Pacific Coast Highway, right where Metro's PCH A Line station lets riders off, sits a space built on a simple idea: everyone deserves a safe, dignified way to get where they're going.

This is Healthy Active Streets' home base and the physical anchor of everything we do in Long Beach.

Our Team

Danny Gamboa, Executive Director

Danny is the executive director of Healthy Active Streets. Over more than a decade with the organization, he has helped grow it from a small grassroots group into a recognized leader in the bicycle advocacy movement.

Danny believes bicycling is a healthy, sustainable, and equitable form of transportation, and he is committed to making it accessible to everyone—regardless of age, race, gender, or income.

Under his leadership, HAS has improved bicycling infrastructure, advocated for bike-friendly policies, and expanded education and outreach — while working to raise awareness of bicycling's benefits and challenge the stereotypes that surround it.

Daichi Gant-Ruiz, League Certified Instructor (LCI), Community Organizer

Daichi is a skilled communicator and facilitator who builds relationships across all walks of life and creates a shared sense of purpose. A dedicated advocate for social change, Daichi brings a steady, community-first approach to organizing work at HAS.

Kim Amaya, Communications

Kim manages communications for Healthy Active Streets, using her expertise in media relations and community branding to champion sustainable infrastructure and empower local residents to reclaim their streets.

Andy Garcia, League Certified Instructor (LCI)

Andy Garcia is a League Certified Instructor (LCI) with the League of American Bicyclists and a bicycle safety workshop facilitator with Healthy Active Streets. Andy leads hands-on safety education, teaching riders of all ages the skills and confidence to navigate Long Beach streets safely.

A student at California State University, Long Beach studying business administration, Andy brings that same organizational mindset to HAS's Youth Bike Program, where she got his start as a member before growing into a leadership role teaching the next generation of riders.

For Andy, safety education isn't just a curriculum — it's personal investment in the community she's part of. Every workshop and bike ride she runs is a chance to pass on the skills that keep fellow cyclists safe and build a new generation of confident, capable riders in Long Beach.
